An Open Letter From JR Lay
Before founding Level Up Business, I spent over 20 years grinding as a B2B entrepreneur in the competitive financial services space.
Despite having crossed 7 figures in revenue for multiple years, cracks were beginning to show. We started losing deals due to competitor pricing. And connecting with prospects became harder as my phone calls and emails went ignored.
After blaming everything around me—clients, prospects, the market—I finally realized that I was the problem. The business I built had quickly become commoditized. We lacked a strong foundation of insight, IP, and influence that could take us to the next level.
Feeling stuck and not knowing what to do next, I hired an outside advisor.
I’ll never forget what he said:
“If you want to grow your business, you’re going to have to write a book.”
I laughed.
But he was serious. He told me the only way I’d break free from the commodity trap was to elevate my brand’s influence by packaging my experience and expertise into a book.
The problem was, even with 15+ years of entrepreneurial experience and decades in the financial industry, I didn’t see myself as an expert.
